Edmonton FringeFest

By: Gregg Coppen

The Edmonton 2010 Fringe Festival app provides you with a convenient way to plan your festival and make sure that you know what is on where and how to get there.

Simply browse to http://fringefest.ca on with your web browser, mobile device or smart phone and automatically be served the version of the app best suited for you.

We support most modern web browsers and a range of devices including ipad, iphone, ipod touch, android, blackberry and opera mini.

With over 160 productions, 1,200 performances and 39 venues at the festival this year, this app will help to make sure you dont miss out on anything. See what shows are popular and read reviews submitted by other festival visitors to be in tune with the festival buzz. Rate shows and give your own reviews to help others find the good stuff.

Key features include:

1.) Amenity, venue and transport maps easily help you to find your way to any location

2.) View info and schedules for all shows (indoor and outdoor) in a variety of ways including as a calendar (week, day and month view), as an ical feed and as a categorised index.

3.) Rate and review shows that you like and keep an eye on whats popular based on other peoples reviews. Reviews are automatically tweeted to @fringereviews so are easily followed on Twitter.

4.) Build your MyFringe shows shortlist and then select what performances you would like to see to build your own personalized calendar that can be easily printed and e-mailed.

All info comes from public data feeds provided by the City of Edmonton and the app makes use of 10 of these feeds. In the spirit of open data, the app uses open source tools including Drupal for the web app and Titanium for the iphone app.

The app launched on August 1st 2010 and enjoyed the following usage stats for the month of August.

- 18078 page views

- 3584 Visits

- 1318 Visitors

- 463 iphone app downloads

- 120 community votes & reviews

It was the winning entry of the "Fringe Special Distinction Award"

This application also serves as a proof of concept for a more generic festival app that could be used in conjunction with open data to easily create web/phone apps for any of Edmontons festivals.

The formula can easily be tweaked to allow rating, reviewing and planning for Folkfest, Horrorfest, YEG food and any other festivals.

It received press in the Edmonton Journal

The application was designed by Angella Coppen and was developed by Gregg Coppen.
