I'd like an app that tells you about upcoming Edmonton events. Users could submit events via twitter, e-mail, facebook, etc... So many times I've learned about an Edmonton event too late to fit it into my schedule, primarily because the newspapers and such only advertise events the weekend of the event, or a few days before. It'd be nice to have a listing of all the festivals and concerts unique to Edmonton so people can see the breadth of Edmonton culture.

Nothing slows down a commute more than running into construction. An app that updates you on ongoing construction in parts of the city would be a major boon for commuters. Also, if the app could be extended to include perhaps sites of traffic accidents, commuters would know which roads to avoid--either to construction or traffic accidents.

The City publishes a Cycling Routes map as a folding map (http://www.edmonton.ca/transportation/roads_traffic/bike-map.aspx). When you're on your bike, it's terribly inconvenient to pull out a map, unfold the whole thing, squint to read the street and ave numbers, find a nearby cycling lane or path, then fold it all up again. A Cycling Map app would be wonderful for cyclists and the City: cyclists could have an up-to-date map in their pocket at all times and the City would not have to spend as much money on printing new maps every year. Google added a bike route option to Google Maps for some cities in March 2010 (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/biking-directions-added-to-google-maps.html). Edmonton cyclists have been scouting out the most efficient routes for some time and have archived some of them at http://www.bikely.com/listpaths/srchkey/Edmonton. The Edmonton Bicycle Commuters' Society (http://www.edmontonbikes.ca) would be a likely consultant for this app. As a staff of EBC, I hear from both new and experienced cyclists that riding on the busy streets is not ideal and that having knowledge of the suggested bike routes is invaluable. A Cycling Routes map application would boost active transportation in Edmonton and facilitate safer cycling.

It would be great to have an app that incorporated GPS (with an option to just select a quadrant of the city). Something with a clean and simplified interface, almost like a few simple fieldsd in a dialog box that said "I want to ________. Then a "today" box, a drop-down to pick a day, and a check-box to allow the app to use GPS, as well as a negihbourhood/quadrant drop-down. Then there could be a drop-down that could include the list of activities. Eg. Swim, Work out, bike, run, play hockey, golf, play tennis, etc. You could also build in a feedback loop so people could suggest alternative nomenclature...bicycle as well as bike, kind of like that. Then the results would display geo-specific schedules of all the available facilities to do those things, listed in order of closeness to the location, and time/day of the week, whatever pertinent facility details there are. The data could be restricted to City-run facilities, but I can see a revenue model (to pay for the app!) where privately-run facilities could also be listed, or perhaps advertised....

Currently, ETS buses are not location aware, i.e. there is no way to know when the a bus will actually arrive at a bus stop. My idea for a mobile-based app will leverage the open transit data in combination with crowdsourced location data. Upon boarding the bus, riders will ‘check-in’ with the app to mark the time and GPS location of the bus, in addition to the bus route number. With this information, Where’s the Bus? will mark the bus’ location on a Google Map, allowing others to track the progression of the bus and better predict when the bus will arrive at the next stop.

Road and traffic construction is not communicated graphically. This idea is to create a map-app that would graphically display road, traffic and River Valley trail construction, and allow users to update the construction status (i.e. of River Valley trail projects). Furthermore, users could define a geographic area on the map where they would be notified (tweeted, text) if any new construction was initiated (i.e. on their commute).

This would be a mobile app. Users with the app the would simply turn it on and let it run in the background of their mobile device. Every 5 minutes or so throughout the day, the app would send the coordinates of the phone's location to central database where it would store the coordinates as a time series (but without any sort of identification information, for privacy). From this time series of points, a series of vectors would be created that show how the app's user moves through the city. Vectors from all users would be aggregated, mapped, and viewable online, where people could view them and interpret emergent patterns and loci of activity within the city.

The App should be a combination of information and forum. For people who is new in Edmonton. It will provide the necessary information about the culture, ETS transit, Housing and rental, pubs, restaurants and etc. The bottom line is that new movers don't have to worry about finding all the information one after one or forget to consider some other information. They will just need to go to one place to see all they need. In my idea, It should be formatted like forum. Other people who knows better can help those new residents by putting their comments or ratings. After all, they can even communicate each other in real life. By using the app, the new residents who will feel like already fit in a big family even though they only moved in Edmonton for a short time.
