This application would allow citizens to search for commonly required services (e.g. schools, day cares, bakery, churches, vet clinics, dentists, etc.) based on proximity to the customer/user's address and neighbourhood. The user could also select, walk/bike, transit or drive. It would return a map, showing their start location and the nearest location(s) of the service selected. Ideally it would also have a link to the business and show the walking,driving or transit route to get to the selected service.

This is a great idea Deb, but I do want to point out that there are currently 2 services in Edmonton that offer the type of information and referral that you are looking for already! 211 Edmonton (just dial 2-1-1) connects you to a live Information and Referral Specialist 24 hours a day 7 days a week. 211 can give you information on non-profit community services, health and government programs. You don't even need to know what it is you need the number for, just what is lacking in your life! The I&R Specialists are trained to ask you questions and sort out what would be the most appropriate referral for your needs.
