Create an application that displays all bus routes based on someone's location information. Pick up the person's location, nearest bus stop number and/or time of day and show next available bus(es) or all of them. Additional functionality could be to see the weekly or monthly schedule of a specific bus route.

I think this is a great idea!Stamos Alithinos

Good idea and a good help for allday bus use.chris
Have you tried using Google Maps? If you go to http://maps.google.com on the left side of the page there is a "Get Directions" link that allows you to punch in 2 addresses or location names and when you want to leave, it then provides you an in detail route for different modes of travel ie bus or car. The reason I ask is that I rarely ride the bus, so I am not sure if the above service falls short in any way.Stamos Alithinos
The benefit this app will have is that you won't have to type anything. The app will utilize the GPS ability of your phone to get your location then display the near bus stop and bus routes for each direction. Google maps needs the user to specify a date and time (departure or arrival) and has to change it each time to see the next available. I think it'll be nice to not only see the nearest stop and all buses but also their whole schedule. If designed propertly, it'll neen minimum input from users and all information will be shown in an organized manner.chris
The Maps app that is one of the default apps that comes with an iPhone seems to be exactly what you are asking for. You can easily use your current location, and find the fastest route based on the time you wish to leave at. There is very little typing and you can easily adjust your leave time and get a new route.Stamos Alithinos
I agree with you but a couple of things that i see are the fact the maps are fairly slow to use especially with some older devices and older software, it requires zooming to be able to read and it is ok if you know your destination location. It also only shows one bus although there can multiple leaving from the same bus stop. What i also have in mind is utilizing some of the same functionality in a page layout format that you don't have to zoom in and out and maybe even save/download your favourite locations.Misty Wilson
Great idea, and it sounds user friendly!eleni
I think your idea will help many people! it would be really nice to be able to find near bus stops and know exactly their route every minute of the day!theano
it's a very good idea, very practical for the daily round. gives people the chance to know all the details they need for their destinations.Lonnie
I don't see the need for another ETS app. The MyStops app for the iPhone works just fine, and does use a GPS function to find the stop closest to you. And like a lot of people says, use Google Maps. I use Google Maps ALL THE TIME to get directions to areas, and it works great. Yes an automated GPS app that tells you what buses are in the area is helpful, but Google Maps functionality of giving you directions to where you want to go is, in my opinion, the best choice. Just because you know which buses are coming in your area, and you can see the map for that bus, doesn't really help you find where you want to go or the connections...Google Maps does and available on many platforms and free. Don't see the need for another ETS app.Stamos Alithinos
I understand that you have and use an iPhone. However this competition in not specifically design to promote iPhone apps but apps for smart phones in general. Although i also own one, some of the other smart devices aren't as easy to use for something like this neither do they have a descent browser to use google maps. Like i mentioned previously, what i have in mind is a very simple, user friendly, fast loading, in text format mainly interface with additional ability perhaps the user can enable.Dan

For those of you that don't use iPhones (like me!) you can also get Google Maps for Android phones. It uses your GPS and will give you up to the minute transit directions from your current location or any other location of your choosing. I use Maps every day as transit is my primary way of getting around and can't say enough good things about it.Jessica
well why dont you combine Satmos's idea with the google maps idea. that way you can add in specific directions to certain places you would like to go and know all of the buses in the area. that way you have best of both worlds and an app that can compete with the google maps app that is already in place. i say it is a win win situation.Victor Rubba
there's 2 apps out there as far as I know. My Stops and Route411, each of them attempt to provide a solution to this.Dustin Bajer
I feel that this app would be best used if integrated with GPS's on the busses themselves; in this way, the exact timing of the bus can be tracked. I've seen another ipod app for carpooling; this app was able to send updates as your ride approached "Your bus will be arriving in 2min." ...etc.Michelle
This would be AWESOME!! Any little bit helps to make things easy to travel. This would be so good!Jim Good
Best idea yet, if it includes Dustin's idea of GPS on the buses themselves giving an ETA, especially in winter when schedules may be off and it may be very cold.
